What to do when the Fighting stops (Challenges for Post-conflict Reconstruction in Angola)

The purpose of the research studies detailed in this publication is to examine what happened after fighting stopped after prolonged and intense conflict in Angola. The ceasefi re in March 2002 marked the end of 27 years of almost continuous confl ict in Angola, and was followed by the disarmament and demobilization of over 100,000 troops.

Two research studies carried out in Angola between 2003 and 2005 are included in this three-part book. Following an overview of the issues related to Angola’s transition from war to peace since 2002, the first study paper discusses the issue of land related to the return, resettlement and reintegration of ex-combatants in post-war Angola, with particular focus on the province of Huambo. The second study paper stems from research carried out between 2004 and 2005 in four Angolan provinces, and examines the challenges and opportunities for creating sustainable peace four years
after Angola’s ceasefire.
