THIS STUDY BRINGS together figures on the incidence of poverty for 120 nations. Most of the volume is taken up with two sections. The first is a table which lists the incidence of poverty for the 120 countries for all available dates. In most instances, the incidence of poverty is presented for the national population and for rural and urban populations. The original source is given for each statistic and notes give the basis on which the poverty line or standard was formed. In some countries, there is only one entry while in others figures are given for many different years - and different figures given for the same year based on different sources or different criteria. For instance, the data for India cover four pages and the figures go back to 1956/57. There are also comparable tables giving data on the incidence of poverty for different years for Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. The second major section gives details of the major sources from which the information was drawn, including the data, the method used for setting the poverty lines, and comments. This is followed by a complete listing of all data sources used.
