Coastal urban climate-resilience planning in Quy Nhon, Vietnam

Climate change can affect coastal areas in a variety of ways including sea-level rise and associated events such as shoreline erosion, coastal flooding and water pollution. New approaches to understanding urban planning and land, water, waste and ecosystem management are needed.  In this working paper, the authors have used a series of Landsat satellite images from 1973 to 2013 to detect changes in urban areas and shoreline modifications in Quy Nhon City, Vietnam. Results show that the changes are significantly associated with anthropogenic activity. The authors also used logistic regression to test the spatial variables involved in the urban expansion process. The study highlights how urban planning is a spatial decision-making process, which requires a multi-disciplinary research approach. It should take into account a range of factors from social aspects to the natural conditions of the urban territory as consideration is given to city development in a global context.
