This is a new, updated and expanded edition of this accessible and insightful history of Buenos Aires that was first published in 1992 by Editorial Mapfre. Eleven chapters explore the history of Buenos Aires from its foundation in 1536, through the colonial city, the republican city and the national capital – and to a discussion of the problems and challenges facing Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area in 1991, viewed at the height of neoliberal policies. For this new edition, a twelth chapter has been added, written by Michael Cohen, reviewing the years since 1991 and the challenges for the future.

This edition includes a lengthy chronology of the city and its surrounds, over 20 pages of statistical tables with data drawn or derived from censuses, 32 pages of historic and recent maps and photos, short biographies of some key figures in the city’s history and an annotated bibliography of key works.
