World Transport Policy and Practice

Urban transport presents a critical challenge for development.— to develop an efficient model, with minimal environmental impact, pollution and health hazards, beneficial to the poor without encouraging the better-off to rely on individual cars. It is not just a technical issue but a very political one. This edited collection provides insight on transport problems around the world through case studies. It first introduces the problem of transport and its effect on the environment, greenhouse gases, air and noise pollution, health problems, traffic accidents and calamities. The remainder of the book is a compilation of chapters highlighting policy frameworks, concerns and progress by region, from Africa, Asia, Australia, Latin America and Europe, and including tables, figures and boxes representing data on such issues as traffic accidents, road density in relation to agricultural land, and per capita vehicle travel in selected counties. The final section presents recommendations and suggestions for addressing the issues .
