THIS DOCUMENT CAME out of an International Seminar on Gender, Urbanization and Environment in Nairobi in June 1994 and drew on the ideas of more than 80 participants and on the 50 papers presented. It starts with an introductory section looking at common themes (such as the globalization of the economy, a new political role for women and what a gender-aware city would look like) and a discussion on how to understand the gender, urbanization and environment process. It then presents a research and policy agenda on Gender, Urbanization and Environment under four main themes: • gender, environment and the urban transition: issues of land and resources; • gender roles in relation to work, migration and the urbanization process; • movements and organizing around gender issues; and • gender policies on housing - or the lack of them. For each theme, there are sections on theory and methods, research priorities and policy priorities. The document ends with a complete list of the seminar papers. A catalogue of abstracts and individual papers are available from Mazingira Institute.
