THIS BOOK IS aimed at people working on urban and environmental studies, public administration and planning, and community development. Drawing upon a wide variety of case studies and policy innovations from around the world, the book examines aspects of many cities of all sizes; it does not seek to produce further evidence of cities in crisis but concentrates instead on practical steps for change. The author cites examples from the developing eco-city literature, government reports, meetings with activists and officials, and her own experiences; many examples of green urban policies are described, illustrating the range of alternative solutions available to city developers, planners and community groups. The book does not draw up blueprints for the perfect green city but promotes instead the idea that green values should be incorporated into city governance and planning. After the many examples of successful green policies have been given, the final question of what ultimately constitutes a green city is left open to the reader.

The book begins with an examination of the concept of green cities, and how this developed historically; also of the values and objectives that underlie the concept. This section underpins the case studies in the rest of the book. Further chapters examine distinct areas of urban planning and policy, including urban design, energy, water, transport, food and agriculture, waste, health, recreation and eco-city institutions. There are also chapters on broader aspects such as economy, culture and democracy. At the end of each chapter, exercises encourage the reader to apply some of the ideas considered in the chapter to the reader's own environment. Finally, an appendix lists organizations concerned with greening cities.
