Principal Researcher vacancy

IIED is looking for a senior research professional to work in its Human Settlements Group. This exciting opportunity would be ideal for someone interested in urbanisation issues – including urban poverty, climate change and inclusive and equitable development, and who has a proven track record in leadership and research at a global level.

IIED is a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. We are based in London and work on five continents with some of the world's most vulnerable people to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them.

Working in collaboration with partner organisations and individuals in low- and middle-income countries, our Human Settlements Group has been leading the field on urban issues including urban poverty, rural-urban linkages, urbanisation and development and climate change adaptation

You will potentially have expertise in the governance, politics and economics of infrastructure and urban development – with particular knowledge of sectors including water, sanitation, energy, or urban ecosystems. We will also welcome applications from researchers with other interests that align with or complement the work of the Human Settlements Group.

As principal researcher, you will develop and lead a programme of research, policy outreach and associated activities that contribute to the overall strategy of IIED and of the Human Settlements Group. You will manage research, dissemination and advocacy work in collaboration with partners in Africa, Latin America and Asia and with colleagues in IIED; and produce a variety of research outputs ensuring effective promotion and dissemination. You will also contribute to the strategic orientations of the group's work and overall management.

To succeed in this role you must have extensive research experience in urban issues demonstrated by a substantial track record of innovative and influential work and publications. As well as a postgraduate qualification in a relevant social science discipline you will have extensive relevant professional experience in countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. You must be well networked with experience of engaging with and advising a wide variety of international stakeholders working on human settlements and have a sustained track record in securing funding from a variety of donors.

Salary: £51,428 – 56,671 (with up to £63,997 available for exceptional candidates) per annum, plus benefits
